The Paul and Aiko Tsuneishi Project

Paul Tsuneishi, born on April 16, 1923, was incarcerated at Heart Mountain concentration camp, Wyoming. He was drafted into the military at age eighteen and after World War II, served as a district governor for the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) in Southern California. In his position with the JACL, he sought to reconcile the Japanese American community with the World War II draft resisters. Before money was available to pay the expenses of those getting oral histories of aging WWII Niseis, Paul spent his own money to fly to various locations to interview a number of prominent Niseis. Frank Chin, the playwright and community activist, accompanied Paul on numerous occasions. These interviews, that were personally transcribed by Paul, were donated to the Japanese American National Museum.

We intend to preserve and maintain these interview recordings and transcripts which will eventually be artistically incorporated into the Kashiwagi sound booth as an educational feature.
